Time Magazine, November 22, 2009 Article: "The '00s: Goodbye (finally) to the Decade of hell," said the first decade of the new millennium could be one of the worst decades for America in recent history. How have arrived at this conclusion?
In the last ten years we experienced two financial collapses – first in 2000-2001 when the dot.com bubble burst. Then again in 2008-2009 – that should not be so difficult to remember. America also suffered from 9 / 11, the Anthrax letters, Hurricane Katrina, businesses big bailouts and unemployment. And last but not least, we have to cope with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to cost U.S. lives and divert more of our tax dollars and resources.
We have learned nothing from the last decade? We have learned many things, but if Washington DC is an indication, we may be doomed to repeat the last 10 years. Have you seen the new policy government to solve the problems on Wall Lawrence and the community of investment banking? Have we put in place new regulations to prevent and investment bankers Wall Street overleveraging its capital and the game of speculative investments and derivatives? No.
Does our Government submitted the project by providing funds to rebuild America's crumbling infrastructure to prevent future disasters, such as those held in New Orleans and Minneapolis? There was much discussion on Capitol Hill and a few small projects approved, but no real progress in financing major infrastructure. Does our Government has given priority to job creation work or requiring banks to use part of TARP money to open credit lines for small businesses? No.
Although we are drawing down our troops in Iraq, it appears that the President intends to strengthen our troop levels in Afghanistan. I'm still waiting to hear what our goal in Afghanistan and why we need 35,000 troops at a cost of over a million dollars per soldier per year. I thought we were going to leave the business of nation building.
I think Afghanistan will be just another Iraq. We first went to Afghanistan to Osama bin Laden, but do not know if he is there or in Pakistan. Do not our profession in another country in the Middle East to increase the determination of terrorists. If we run out of al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan are not merely transfer operations to another country? Is it really necessary to spend 35 billion dollars a year to democratize Afghanistan? So how we can get back on track in moving America forward? The economy must be our number one priority. Job creation should be right over. Financial regulations must be reattached to regulate Wall Street and investment bankers. When it comes to banking regulations, investment banks and commercial banks must not be under the same umbrella. They are very different and should be regulated and insured differently. Why the government should deal with banks investment the same as commercial banks and ensure the speculation of investment bankers? It makes no sense.
The American people need more involved in government, trade policy, business and government regulations. While lobbyists for the industry are having a significant influence on legislators in developing policies in Washington that people will not have a say in how companies and the industry is regulated and controlled. We have to recover our government to corporate America and lobbyists. Are not they supposed that a people's government by the people and for the people?
One way to ensure that our voices heard in Washington to take advantage of the Internet and raise our voices. The democratization of the web and galvanize public opinion on each question, we can use Internet to tell the politicians exactly how we feel about each of these issues as they arise.
The main political parties and their leaders seem more interested in working against each other to address these issues. Instead of doing the job they were elected, they do not seem interested in blocking the progress of each other instead of working to adopt the necessary legislation to get America back on track. I'm not suggesting deconstruct our political party system, but to give Washington a non-biased political barometer what their constituents think about a particular subject at a given point in time.
